Drainage of Peat and Muck Lands Drainage of Peat and Much Lands

چکیده
Peat and muck soils have unique biological, physical, and chemical properties, and on them the common drainage and management practices that are used on mineral soils are not suitable. Biologically the organic soils support hosts of micro-organisms, mostly bacteria, which are largely responsible for the formation and alteration of the peat. The action of the anaerobic micro-organisms builds up the organic soils. The aerobic organisms are largely responsible for decomposition. The soils have a dark color, light weight, and an absorptive, spongelike texture. They have high absorptive and radiant properties, a high heat capacity, and low heat conductivity. They burn at relatively low temperatures and have a high cation exchange and a high buffer capacity, which strongly resists changes in acid reaction. Peats tend to be acid, but range from pH 3.5 to 8.0. The peat and muck soils cover an estimated 80 million acres in the United States, mostly in the cool, temperate, humid region of Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey, and the Great Lakes States of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, and Indiana. Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan have about 75 percent of the total peat and muck lands in this country. Large bog deposits exist in the warmtemperate, humid region within the southeastern coastal plain swamps of Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia, and along the coastal marsh tidelands of Louisiana and Texas. The subtropical, humid region of Florida, including the Everglades and related localities, make up 14 percent of the total national deposits. Other deposits, 539

Landcover Pattern Analysis of Tropical Peat Swamp Lands in Southeast Asia
Tropical peat swamp lands in the Southeast Asia which store tremendous large amount of carbon in their peat layer and abundant biodiversity are now endangered by human activities such as deforestation, forest fires, land development and urbanization. To earlier start a better environmental policy for conservation of nature of the tropical peat swamp area is one of the preferential global issues...
متن کاملLogged peat swamp forest supports greater macrofungal biodiversity than large‐scale oil palm plantations and smallholdings
Intensive land expansion of commercial oil palm agricultural lands results in reducing the size of peat swamp forests, particularly in Southeast Asia. The effect of this land conversion on macrofungal biodiversity is, however, understudied. We quantified macrofungal biodiversity by identifying mushroom sporocarps throughout four different habitats; logged peat swamp forest, large-scale oil palm...
متن کاملThe importance of pH and sand substrate in the revegetation of saline non-waterlogged peat fields.
A partially peat-extracted coastal bog contaminated by seawater was barren and required revegetation as a wetland. Peat fields were rectangular in shape, cambered in cross-section profile, and separated by drainage ditches. Common to all peat fields were symmetrical patterns in micro-topography with slopes between differences in elevation. Saline non-waterlogged slopes of ∼5% occurred as a symm...
متن کاملLand Use Changes and GHG Emissions from Tropical Forest Conversion by Oil Palm Plantations in Riau Province, Indonesia
Increasing prices and demand for biofuel and cooking oil from importer countries have caused a remarkable expansion of oil palm plantations in Indonesia. In this paper, we attempt to monitor the expansion of oil palm plantations on peat land and in tropical forests. We measure the GHG emissions from the land conversion activities at provincial scale. Using Landsat images from three different pe...

The research in the fields of irrigation and drainage network in the province Hamidieh to evaluate the performance of drainage was done in the land. For this purpose, three drainage server farm at intervals of 50, 70 and 80 meters in the area was selected. Blank observation on three drain pipes at intervals of 0.3,0.8,1.5,2.5 and 15 meters of lateral drains in the middle of the line in four row...
